Berklee Indian Ensemble featuring Dhruv Goel - Pinha

The Berklee Indian Ensemble is delighted to present "Pinha" by Dhruv Goel. ‘Pinha’ means ‘hidden within.’ Based on a ghazal written by Fatima Wasia Jaisi, it celebrates the victory of the human spirit over adverse conditions that arise due to prejudices against gender, religion, and ethnicity. For lyrics and translation, please see below. Founded in 2011 by faculty member, Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally, presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and popular music, and has collaborated with various world renowned artists. Berklee Indian Ensemble ft. Armeen Musa - Jaago Piya

We are delighted to release "Jaago Piya" on the auspicious occasion of Bangla Noboborsha, the first day of the Bengali Calendar year 1423. Shubhô Nôbobôrsho from all of us at Berklee College of Music! The first in a series of original compositions from the Berklee Indian Ensemble, "Jaago Piya" was written by Armeen Musa, the first Bangladeshi student to join the Berklee Indian Ensemble. Her mother, Dr. Nashid Kamal wrote the Bengali lyrics which can be found here: http://bit.ly/1OX8AFv Over the years, every time the Indian Ensemble performed this piece, the arrangement evolved, with new ideas contributed by different members, until we finally recorded it with students from 17 countries. To us, "Jaago Piya" is a gentle, loving reminder to stay present, in the moment, to always be hopeful, and live a life filled with gratitude. According to Armeen, "What inspires me is music. The ability of music to connect to our silent thoughts, be a gift of solidarity, in happiness and sadness, inspires and motivates me, to be a part of motions bigger than myself." What inspires you? A little cultural background: Jaago Piya is a collaboration of soundscapes; the melody has a semi classical flavour (classical referring to the classical music of the Indian subcontinent,) with vocal harmony that is rarely used in such a tune. The song being in Bangla, inspired the ensemble to use Bengali colours and clothes for the visual to showcase a bit of Bengali culture. The primary theme was using the gamcha (local checked cloth used as a towel) as clothing, scarves, hairpieces inspired by Bangladeshi fashion designer Bibi Russel, who brought the gamcha to the international fashion industry. Bengali New Year is a grandly celebrated day of the year in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, a truly colorful occasion, with parades, daylong musical concerts and festivals held in every corner of the country and in homes. The video hopes to capture that beautiful spirit with its own diversity and colours. ---- Founded in 2011 by faculty member, Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. The ensemble performs a wide array of South Asian music, with the ultimate goal of presenting concerts that consist entirely of original student compositions. Berklee Indian Ensemble ft Vijay Prakash - Arz-E-Niyaz by Sashank Navaladi

The Berklee Indian Ensemble is delighted to release our second student original "Arz-E-Niyaz" by Sashank Navaladi, featuring the award-winning virtuosic Indian vocalist and composer, Vijay Prakash on Mirza Ghalib's 219th birth anniversary. It's the first time the Berklee Indian Ensemble has had a renowned artist perform on a student composition, and hope this will be the first of many such collaborations. Hailing from Mysore, Karnataka in India, Vijay Prakash is one of the most sought after Indian playback singers with hits in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi films. He has performed with the likes of Zakir Hussain, A.R. Rahman, and Taufiq Qureshi at venues like Wembley Stadium, the O2 Arena, WOMAD and Woodstock. He also won the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer (Kannada) for the song 'Gatiya Ilidu' from the film 'Ulidavaru Kandante,' and was one of the four vocalists on "Jai Ho" which won both, a Grammy and an Academy award. The Berklee Indian Ensemble recorded "Arz-E-Niyaz" with Mr. Prakash during his Berklee India Exchange artist residency at the college in November 2015. Our composer, Sashank, was inspired by "Arz-E-Niyaz," a poem written by the preeminent Urdu and Persian Sufi poet of the 19th century, Mirza Ghalib. Written in the form of eight couplets, 'arz-e-niyāz-e-ishq' literally translates to the 'supplication for the blessings of love.' Ghalib reflects on the days when the heart was more engulfed in the humility of passion and considered himself a more worthy offering to the beloved. For a detailed translation of the poem, please visit: https://goo.gl/P4zWCo Special thanks to our friends from the literary world for helping us with pronunciation of the Urdu lyrics: Urdu specialist, Salim Arif, and poetess, Sunayana Kachroo Vijay Prakash: http://www.vijay-prakash.com/home.html Sashank Navaladi: https://soundcloud.com/sashanknavaladi https://www.facebook.com/sashanknavaladi/ Berklee Indian Ensemble: http://www.facebook.com/BerkleeIndia https://www.facebook.com/berkleeindianensemble http://www.twitter.com/BerkleeIndiaX http://www.berklee.edu/india Berklee: Subscribe: http://bit.ly/1MjVyEN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/berkleecollege Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/berkleecollege Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berkleecollege Site: https://www.berklee.edu Founded in 2011 by faculty member, Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Berklee Indian Ensemble ft Shreya Ghoshal - Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha (Live at Berklee)

In 2017, the Berklee Indian Ensemble presented a landmark collaborative concert with its fifth Artist in Residence, Indian playback singer Shreya Ghoshal. The Ensemble is delighted to share an excerpt from that evening: a reimagining of the 1962 classic, “Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha”. Presented here with just four musicians — Ms. Ghoshal, lauto player Vasilis Kostas (Greece), violinist Layth Sidiq (Iraq/Jordan), and tabla player Giri Subramaniam (India) — this simple but soulful interpretation was performed in tribute to one of India’s most iconic voices: Lata Mangeshkar. About the Berklee Indian Ensemble: Founded in 2011 by faculty member Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of the largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally; presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and contemporary music; and has collaborated with various world-renowned artists, garnering over 180 million views for their viral videos to date. Led by John McLaughlin (guitar) and Zakir Hussain (tabla), 'Remember Shakti' included U. Shrinivas (mandolin), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), and V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam). It was indeed an honor for our Berklee Indian Ensemble musicians to reinterpret such an iconic composition, and collaborate on this live performance with Shankar Ji as part of the fourth Berklee India Exchange (BIX) Artist Residency. We also dedicate this video in tribute to John McLaughlin who will receive an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music on July 10th, 2017 in Valencia, Spain. About the Berklee Indian Ensemble: Founded in 2011 by faculty member, Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally, presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and popular music, and has collaborated with various world renowned artists. #berklee #berkleecollegeofmusic A.R. Rahman's “Kun Faya Kun” performed live by The Berklee Indian Ensemble at Symphony Hall, Boston. Sufism, the mystical sect of Islam, is partly characterized by its rich musical tradition, primarily based on the writings of Sufi poets such as Rumi, Amir Khusrau, and Bulleh Shah. Well known for drawing influence from his faith and the Sufi tradition, A.R. Rahman, rearranged this beautiful Qawwali by the Sufi-saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya for the 2011 film, "Rockstar," with additional lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil.
